VACUUM CLEANER REPORT CANISTER VERSES UPRIGHT

What kind of vacuum cleaner should you purchase? Canister or Upright? Should your new vacuum cleaner include a HEPA filter?

These questions have been asked for many years! My name is Barry Cohen and I have been in the indoor air quality, air cleaner and vacuum cleaner industry since 1989. It is my desire that this report will help you choose the proper vacuum cleaner that will best fit your needs.

Since canister vacuum cleaners have the most all around cleaning advantages due to their unique abilities I will talk about canister vacuum cleaners first.

Canister vacuum cleaners are better designed to accept larger more powerful motors for superior suction and cubic feet per minute {CFM} of airflow. This makes for better cleaning ability.

Well-designed canister vacuum cleaners are sealed better then uprights to prevent the out-gassing of dust and allergens back into your indoor environment while you are cleaning with them. If you have allergies, asthma or if you're really after a more dust free home purchase a high quality canister vacuum cleaner with a certified HEPA filter.

Canister vacuum cleaners have a flexible hose attached to them allowing you to reach into tight spots to clean. You can also work high over your head to clean furniture, bookcases and ceiling areas

Canister vacuum cleaners have power heads that are lighter and more powerful then uprights and they are easier to push though carpeting. Remember when you're operating an upright; you have to push the entire weight of the vacuum cleaner through the carpet.

Canister vacuum cleaners are designed with low profile power heads for cleaning tough to reach areas underneath tables, beds and furniture.

If the power head breaks down or wears out on a canister vacuum cleaner all you have to do is replace it. In the meantime you can switch to another tool to continue cleaning. When the power head breaks down on an upright, you're stuck waiting for a repair shop to fix it or you're on your way to the store to replace the entire vacuum cleaner with a new one!

Canister vacuum cleaners are loaded with specialty tools to clean different types of surfaces and locations such as carpeted staircases, hard wood, floors, ceramic tile floors, different kinds of furniture fabrics and ceiling fans.

Canister vacuum cleaners are by far the best type of vacuum cleaner to gain access to your car's interior.

The advantages of uprights are few. Newer design uprights now have a flexible vacuum hose attached to them to for hard to reach spaces. However the flex hose is usually shorter then on canisters and more limited for extended reaches.

Some people prefer uprights because they like to have the vacuum cleaner in front of them to push. Upright vacuum cleaners are easy to use in large open carpeted areas. But so are many canisters. Some people prefer uprights simply because they are so used to pushing old Betsy around from habit. Know that uprights tend to leak dusty air back into the indoor environment while cleaning with them. Most people find that the newer design and higher quality canisters are much higher quality then their uprights after they make the switch.

Note: Stay away from bag-less vacuum cleaners! This is because when you dump the dust container in a bag-less vacuum cleaner, the dust fly's up into the air to re-contaminate the entire area! Many people complain that the dust often blows onto their face and clothes. Vacuum cleaners that use paper bags to contain the dust and allergens are your best choice.

Our company has been in the vacuum cleaner business since 1989. We have sold, operated and tested only the top brands and models of both upright and canister vacuum cleaners to benefit our many customers with allergies, asthma and dust problems. Most of the vacuum cleaners operated and tested included HEPA filters. All of the vacuum cleaners we have sold to our many customers were and still are HEPA filtered. Brands we have tested include Dyson, Miele, Nilfisk, ORECK, Rainbow by Rexaire, Filter Queen, Electrolux, Royal, Kirby, Hoover, Panasonic, Compact and the Tristar.

From our years of experience we have discovered and truly feel that only the Airstorm HEPA vacuum cleaner {Made In The USA} is the highest quality HEPA vacuum cleaner on the market. The Airstorm is superior because of its powerful cleaning ability, user friendliness and 100 percent airtight sealed canister HEPA filtration system.

HEPA FILTERED VACUUM CLEANERS

HEPA FILTERED VACUUM CLEANERS
WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN MAKING A PURCHASE.

This information, is brought to you by Absolute Air Cleaners and Purifiers Inc.

First, some quick history about vacuum cleaners!

The first vacuum cleaner was invented and Patented in the USA by Robert Taber in 1869. MR. Taber invented this wood and canvas hand pump controlled vacuum cleaner in his Chicago Illinois home. He called it The Whirlwind.

The first electric motor operated vacuum cleaner with a cloth dust filter bag with cleaning attachments was put on the market in 1908 by who else, The Hoover Company in New Berlin Ohio.

In the 1940's HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filters were invented to filter out radioactive dust particulate contaminants in bomb shelters during the atomic bomb tests. These filters were designed to capture particles down to 0.3 microns in size at efficiency ratings of 99.97%. This standard is still used to this day for HEPA vacuum cleaners and HEPA air cleaners for asbestos and lead abatement. However HEPA vacuum cleaners are now used everyday in homes and businesses to clean and remove household dust and allergens to improve the indoor air quality you breathe.

HEPA Vacuum cleaners come in two basic styles, upright and canister. The upright HEPA vacuum stands by itself and is a single unit, some with or without an attachment hose to clean hard to reach areas with specialized vacuum tools. All upright vacuum cleaners tend to leak more dusty air back into the environment. Also since the rug beater bar is permanently attached to the case of the vacuum cleaner, the vacuum cleaner is almost worthless if the beater bar fails.

HEPA canister (Better Overall Choice) vacuum cleaners have a smaller mostly more powerful, compact designed case that will roll along and follow behind you as you vacuum the floor, carpet, furniture or upholstery. A long hose is attached to canister vacuum cleaners so you can reach those hard to get areas with the many vacuum tools that are available for them for easy cleaning of most any surface. The rug beaters are detachable from the canister type vacuum cleaner units. They are often much more powerful then the ones found on uprights. This is because they are powered by their own separate motor. If an electric motor powered rug beater breaks down on a canister vacuum cleaner, it can still be used to clean many surfaces while the rug beater is being repaired or replaced.

Important Design Information, There are different designs of HEPA canister vacuum cleaners available to you. The most common is a case made of plastic with a disposable paper dust collector bag to catch the dust from your home and into the vacuum cleaner. Be aware that many of these so called HEPA vacuum cleaners can and do leak dusty air through air gaps in their UN PRESSURIZED plastic cases and around the openings that surround the HEPA filter itself. The dirty air can then pass through the exhaust side of the vacuum cleaner and back into your indoor environment to breathe and react to! Another important fact to know is, Both HEPA and non HEPA vacuum cleaners pass the air flow from the vacuum cleaner tools being used and then into the unit. The dirty air is then passed into the dust containment bags located inside of the vacuum cleaners tank and then onward to the motor where the air is then forced out of the vacuum cleaner through the exhaust side of the vacuum cleaner.

The COMMON problem is, when the dust bags containing the dirt become about one third full, the fine dust particles plug the pores of the paper dust collector bags. This restricts a tremendous amount of air flow to the motor which will cause the vacuum cleaner to lose suction while putting a strain on the motor reducing its life. This restriction of air flow to the motor can cut the cleaning ability of the vacuum cleaner up to 80%! That's why most people end up replacing their costly less then half full dust collector bags far too often. And their vacuum cleaners as well!

Important INFO On Water Filtered Vacuum Cleaners, There are 6 or 7 brands of vacuum cleaners on the market that use water to trap dust particles instead of a proper government certified HEPA filter. We have found these water vacuum cleaners to be inefficient, heavy and bulky. For years the companies that produced these water filtered vacuum cleaners boasted how they were superior to HEPA vacuum cleaners and all others. This was until a few independent testing laboratories tested them with a laser particle counter and proven that they leaked a whole lot of dust back into the air! Now some of these same companies are adding a replaceable HEPA filter into the exhaust side of their water vacuums. This defeats the entire concept about water being a better filter and the dirty water vapor mixed with air blowing into the HEPA filter may promote mold and bacteria growth in the HEPA filter itself! Also water vacuum cleaners are often heavy, bulky and it can be a real mess filling them with tap water and then dumping the moldy, smelly, dirty water from the units every time you operate them! Most of these water vacuum cleaners offer chemical fragrances to add into the water to cover up the moldy odor they release into the air that your breathe while vacuuming. Many people with allergies or asthma will react to these chemicals! Also it is another added cost to operating these units on top of the cost of replacing the HEPA filters. We recommend that you stay away from water filtered vacuum cleaners!

What We Recommend & Why: We have been in the allergy products, air cleaner and vacuum cleaner business since 1989. Throughout the years we have been distributors for both the Miele and Nilfisk HEPA vacuum cleaner companies. We thought that both of these vacuum cleaners were top quality. Only after we had witnessed the Vacuum cleaner smoke-dye test, did we discover how wrong we were to believe that the other HEPA filtered vacuum cleaners on the market actually worked. We saw the smoke-dye test preformed on just about every brand of vacuum cleaner on the market. (Including those with HEPA filters and with water filtration) Under controlled conditions, smoke with dye was sucked into each of the many brands and models of vacuum cleaners that were in the test. During the test, we could plainly see the smoke-dye pouring out of almost every brand of vacuum cleaner. The smoke-dye was pouring from every crack and crevice in the case, including from the pre-filters, HEPA filters, motors and dust bags. We saw the same effect on every bag- less type and water filtered vacuum cleaner. (Excluding the ) When the smoke-dye test was preformed on the  HEPA Vacuum Cleaner, not one bit of smoke-dye escaped from this great unit. Not one bit of smoke-dye could penetrate through the sealed HEPA Air filtration system or out from the sturdy sealed case of the  HEPA Filtered Vacuum Cleaner! We could not believe how terribly these other brands of vacuum cleaners were put together. The first thing that came to mind was WOW, how much bacteria and moldy dust had to be pouring out of these other vacuum cleaners only to be blown back into our breathing environment. No wonder people get sick when they are vacuuming their homes. All of the other vacuum cleaners that were included in the smoke-dye test were being advertised to the public as allergy free! What a rip off! We now understood that just because these other brands had a HEPA filter or a water filtration system inside of them, it did not mean that these other vacuum cleaners were actually sealed and allergen free as advertised. It was obvious that these other vacuum cleaner companies were negligent by not telling the public that their so-called filtered vacuum cleaners still leaked dusty air that could be loaded with dangerous bacteria and molds. We immediately ordered one of the s so we could test it out to see how well it cleaned and operated. When we received our , we removed it from the box, and were pleased to see how easy it was to set up. The ample 1000 Square inch certified HEPA filter, motor filter and the dust collector bag fit into the  like clockwork. In five short minutes, we were vacuuming our carpets, tile and hardwood floors. The 's Ametek 2 stage 22,500 RPM motor is very quiet but extremely powerful. The motor driven rug beater bar is very powerful and it easily lifted the dirt and debris from the carpet and into the flow of the vacuum cleaners powerful suction. Its smart looking case is both sturdy and lightweight as it is made out of a composite material like Kevlar. It was apparent that the was out performing the Miele, Nilfisk and every other vacuum cleaner that we had previously tested or sold. The 's unique cyclonic technology allows the air to bypass the dust collector bag by going over it instead of through it like the other brands do. This allows the dust collector bag to fill up with dust and debris without losing power to the motor. The  is made in the USA and it's estimated lifetime is 35 years plus! It will serve you and your family for many years to come. We truly feel that the  is by far the highest quality and most user-friendly HEPA vacuum cleaner on the market. It will clean your home better then any other vacuum cleaner in the world while keeping your indoor air quality clean and clear of potentially dangerous allergens, bacteria and mold filled dust.

New Trends For HEPA Air Cleaners & Air Purifiers

My name is Barry Cohen, owner of Absolute Air Cleaners And Allergy Products athttp://www.aircleaners.com/

I have been in the indoor air quality and HEPA air cleaner / air purifier industry since 1989. Ever since my entrance into this growing industry concerns for improved indoor air quality have been soaring! When I first started to provide HEPA air cleaners to our customers the big concern was for regular house hold allergies that came from dust, pollen, pet dander and smoke. Then in the early 1990's scientists discovered how dust-mite allergen and out-gassing chemicals from carpeting, glues and other common household building materials can play havoc for people with allergies, asthma COPD and even create chronic, disabling immune dysfunctions. This brought even more people into the indoor air quality picture! Higher quality brands of HEPA air cleaners and air purifiers came onto the market, now with increased air exchange rates per hour and pounds of activated carbon and Zeolite to absorb dangerous out-gassing chemicals from the indoor environment. Environmental physicians came onto the scene to diagnose and treat people with environmental illnesses. Companies that specialized in detecting and remediation of sick indoor environments starting multiplying to help the people suffering from the many environmental illnesses that were being discovered and on the increase!

The Growing Need To Control Airborne Molds, Bacteria And Viruses

Today's newest generation of HEPA air cleaners and air purifiers have a new and greater task to perform and the technology is already in place and doing its job. The new trend for HEPA air cleaners and air purifiers is not just for capturing airborne allergens and out-gassing chemicals; they also have the ability to KILL MOLD SPORES, BACTERIA and VIRUSES! Toxic molds and bacteria's in indoor environments have been on the increase due to improper construction of homes and commercial buildings and by environmental disasters caused by floods, hurricanes and tornados. Homes, schools, hospitals and office building environments are all being affected by dangerous strains of molds and bacteria. New strains of dangerous airborne viruses are on the increase and so is the threat of a deadly Pandemic such as the SARS virus or the Avian Flu also known as Bird Flu.

The Answer

There are two different types of technology that are now used in HEPA filtered air purifiers that will control dust, allergens, other particulates and now biological contaminates in indoor air environments They are UV {Ultra-Violet} lights that are aimed into the intake side of the HEPA filter and EGF {Enhanced Germicidal Filtration} that works by permeating 100% of the filter with 18 Kilovolts of electricity. Both technologies are able to effectively kill and prevent mold spores, bacteria and viruses from surviving in the filter media of the air purifier only allowing 100% clean germ free air to enter back into your indoor environment. The two air purifiers to look for is the TRACS HEPA air purifier using the UV {Ultra-Violet} light technology and the Bio-Net HEPA air purifier that uses the EGF {Enhanced Germicidal Filtration} technology. These units are so effective they are used in hospitals to protect people going through organ transplants and chemotherapy that cannot be exposed to biological contaminants. However with the growing concern for clean air in indoor environments many of these top quality air purifiers are now being used in homes to protect families and in office spaces to protect workers.

Consumer Reports Magazine Recommends Inferior Air Cleaners And Air Purifiers.

When a trusted and respected consumer products review magazine does not properly test and evaluate a product category, their product recommendations can actually be a HUGE DIS-SERVICE to their readers and to the general public. According to many top air cleaner and air purifier manufacturers, this is the case in the October 2005 & the December 2007 issues of Consumer Reports Magazine where the magazine includes articles titled "Air Cleaners: Some Do Little Cleaning and "Air Purifiers, Filtering The Claims". In these horrible and inaccurate articles, Consumer Reports Magazine glorifies the poorly designed, low quality room air cleaners, giving them top recommendations, and failed to recognize the vastly superior HEPA air cleaners and air purifiers such as the Austin Air Healthmate HEPA air cleaner, the TRACS HEPA Air Purifier, the EZ Air HEPA air cleaner and the Bio-Net Air Purifier that include Enhanced Germicidal Filtration {EGF} technology or non ozone producing Ultraviolet light systems which also will eliminate mold spores, bacteria and viruses from the indoor air environment. These top quality brands of HEPA air cleaners and air purifiers are recognized by well known top air cleaner and air purifier dealers, product reviewers and general every day users from around the world as the top HEPA room air cleaners and HEPA air purifiers on the market available for home, hospital and business use.

The answer to the question of why these brands and models of the highest quality HEPA air cleaners and HEPA air purifiers are getting poor and improper recognition of their true air cleaning abilities is simple:

It's because of CONSUMER REPORTS MAGAZINE'S reliance on INADEQUATE AND INAPPROPROPRIATE testing methods and the result is tarnishing the reputations of the truly high quality HEPA air cleaner and air purifier brands that are readily available to the people that need them. This is no mystery to the leading air cleaner experts and the manufacturers of the highest quality HEPA air cleaners and air purifiers. The problem stems from Consumer Reports' adoption of an inadequate test protocol called the clean air delivery rate also known as the CADR testing protocol originating from the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM). AHAM is a trade association that promotes air cleaning products for the interests of their paying members, who just happen to mostly be the very manufacturers of the commonly found air cleaners and air purifiers in the major big box department chain stores such as Home Depot, Wal-Mart, Kmart, Lowes etc... Many air cleaner and air purifier manufacturers that are non-AHAM members refuse to join because of the way AHAM conducts its CADR testing methods and business. Many also feel that AHAM is a self- serving marketing club for its PAYING MEMBER'S that happen to mostly be the giant corporate general and small appliance manufacturers that AHAM represents!

AND READ THIS IMPORTANT INFORMATION!

Not only does AHAM do the promoting and testing of their own member's air cleaners and air purifiers, AHAM also has a vested interest in the profits their members make! Here's why: To be a member of AHAM a factory or company must pay a large sum of money each year for the membership alone! But on top of that membership fee, members must also pay AHAM a percentage of money earned from the total sales of the AHAM represented air cleaners or air purifiers that are sold each and every year as a member! This can add up to a HUGE amount of money per year!

So is it ethical for Consumers Reports Magazine to promote and accept AHAM's CADR testing methods when AHAM is literally making money from the profits of it's own members sales that they represent??? WE DON'T THINK SO! DO YOU?

There are five huge flaws to Consumer Reports' air cleaner testing that result in misleading recommendations to consumers.

First, many of Consumer Reports' top ranked air cleaner products use electrostatic or ionizing technologies which add an electrostatic charge to airborne particles causing them to temporarily adhere or drop to and stick to a nearby surface such as the walls or the floor of the testing area. THIS PREVENTS THE AIRBORNE ALLERGENS AND PARTICULATES FROM EVER MAKING THEIR WAY TO THE AIR CLEANERS AND TEST EQUIPMENT in the testing chamber. This temporarily repels the particles away from the detection area of the particle counting test equipment, but when the electrostatic charge dissipates those particles can quickly become airborne again. Consumer Reports' does not distinguish between particles permanently removed by the air cleaner and charged particles that are temporarily attached to test chamber surfaces through ionization, and there is a huge difference between the two as it affects your everyday breathing.. The Austin Air Healthmate, the TRACS, the EZ AIR and BIO-NET air cleaners and air purifiers all clean the air by HEPA quality filtration thus capturing and permanently removing the airborne particles from the room or open area at a very high air exchange rate per hour, never to become airborne again.

Second, Consumer Reports only tests for an air cleaners' ability to affect the largest 20% of airborne particles. Scientists agree that it is the ultra-fine particles that present the greatest health risks to consumers because they can penetrate deeply into the lungs and reach every cell of our bodies. Many room air cleaners sold to consumers have poor efficiency for ultra-fine particles.

Units containing certified hospital grade HEPA filters have a minimum efficiency of 99.97% on particles down to 0.3 microns, and therefore are capable of removing these harmful ultra-fine particles. This efficiency rating is known as the H13 standard for HEPA filters, and is standard with most individually certified HEPA filters.

Third, Consumer Reports fails to test room air cleaners for their ability to remove chemical off- gassing, {Volatile Organic Compounds} -VOCs and odors from the indoor environment. Chemical off- gassing, VOCs and odors significantly contribute to potentially unhealthy indoor air pollution. Not testing for chemical off- gassing, VOCs and odor removal ability significantly disadvantages air cleaners that contain considerable odor/chemical filtration technologies. Some of the air cleaners and air purifiers tested by Consumer Reports are advertised as being effective against gases and odors, but only two of the air cleaners we found tested contain significant gas and odor filtration.

In order for people to benefit from effective odor, chemical, and gas removal, significant amounts of odor adsorption filtration must be employed. The primary means of odor, chemical, and gas removal is through activated and blended carbons, and given carbon adsorbs fumes like a sponge. Units using bulk carbon filters (at least 3 1/2 lbs replaced approximately three or more times per year) are able to remove far more odors chemicals, and gases than systems that use only a very small amount of carbon, mostly almost worthless carbon dust impregnated into thin fiber pads. Multiple pounds of activated carbon are a much safer and superior technology than what is found in ionizers as well, for ionizers typically produce non- adjustable levels of ozone, which is often their only means of odor removal. However, as stated by the US Environmental Protection Agency, units that produce ozone can present a health risk, especially for those with asthma or lung problems given the amount of ozone needed to effectively remove odors.

Fourth, it is amazing that Consumer Reports fails to inform consumers that the entirety of their air cleaner evaluation is based on a very short period of testing time. We believe that this short test time is ineffective and should be totally changed to test for both the short and long term cleaning ability of air cleaners and air purifiers. Air cleaning experts have long been aware that poorly designed air cleaners lose much of their effectiveness within a very short period of operating time. Long-term testing would reveal the inefficiency of electrostatic precipitators, ionizers and units that combine air filters with ionizers as proper air cleaners and air purifiers. It would also demonstrate the problems inherent in air cleaners that use synthetic HEPA instead of mechanical HEPA. Mechanical HEPA filtration has been the technology of choice in critical environments, such as hospitals and clean rooms for decades. Although air cleaners with synthetic HEPA filters have a higher initial airflow in a testing chamber, they have been demonstrated and proven to significantly lose efficiency and re-release particles over time.

Air cleaners that use individually certified HEPA filters (the same as those used in hospitals across the world) do not lose their efficiency over time. In fact, a certified HEPA filter's efficiency actually increases as it becomes clogged, for it becomes more and more difficult for particles to pass through.

Lastly, while Consumer Reports scorns some air cleaners for producing ozone, they have backhandedly recommend air cleaners that also produce significant amounts of ozone. Consumer Reports appears to take the stance that some degree of ozone production is acceptable in room air cleaners.

ALSO, SADLY Consumer Reports gives some of its highest ratings to air cleaners and air purifiers that do not use certified HEPA filters! Many of these top rated air cleaners also emit negative ions into the air forcing the dust and allergens to drop onto your bed while you are sleeping and onto other surfaces away from the air cleaner itself!

This is one of the tricks being used to get high CADR test ratings because the particulates never make it to the air cleaner to be tested at the unit's exhaust point, and this forces the floating particulates out of suspension in the test room or chamber, effectively manipulating the test TO FOOL YOU THE CONSUMER!

Ethical HEPA air cleaner manufacturers that produce quality air cleaner and air purifier products share the belief of the American Lung Association that HEPA air cleaners and air purifiers should not produce any amounts of ozone.

Most of the air cleaners and air purifiers tested and recommended by Consumer Reports would not be deemed acceptable to be used in hospitals and other critical environments due to the unreliability of their technology and their poor long-term performance.

Consumer Reports Magazine needs to recognize that people use room air cleaners and air purifiers to provide honest, healthy environments in their homes and work places. The people that read and trust Consumer Reports Magazine deserve air cleaner evaluations at the same high standards used by hospitals and other critical environments.

If Consumer Reports Magazine adopts better testing methods, they will soon realize they have long recommended poorly designed room air cleaners and air purifiers. It is a true fact that for many years now, air cleaner and air purifier manufactures and dealers have been complaining to Consumer Reports about upgrading their testing methods with absolutely no luck at all!

It is our opinion that both the people at Consumer Reports magazine and AHAM should both consult with the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers {ASHRAE} for new, proper air cleaner and air purifier standards to assure that the air cleaning products that are manufactured and recommended, truly perform as advertised for the benefit of the people that operate them.

NOTE: On December 11th & 12th 2007 I called Consumer Reports Magazine in my attempt to again talk to someone in the division that tests the air cleaner and air purifiers about how and why they do their testing to AHAM's CADR standards. I told the customer relations reprehensive that helped me that I wanted to know why the magazine still continues to use the CADR testing method and I told her all about my concerns, The Rep's name was Kim H. Kim was very nice and I believe that she really did her best to help me as she called me back a couple of times to tell me that she forwarded my concerns to the right people with the word urgent in the message but they did not return her calls or E-mail. All she could tell me was that she had no idea why they would not contact her or me back about this subject. I guess this is the way Consumers Reports conducts business with people that question the way they test their products! I feel that this is very wrong and any company that is in business to guide people that have such total trust in them should be ready to hear the concerns of the people that are affected by their published product choices so they can always strive to do better for the millions of people that follow their recommendations!

So for now if you are searching for a quality air cleaner or air purifier it is advisable to do your own diligent research and question the specialized and professional air cleaner and air purifier dealers that sell them so you can make an educated decision when purchasing an air cleaner or air purifier that will best suit your needs!

I will end this by saying:

Pet Allergy Information How To Live With Your Cat Or Dog

Pet Allergy Information How To Live With Your Dog Or Cat

Did you know that over 70 percent of households in the United States share their lives and living space with pet dogs and cats? Yes, this is a fact and this report is to help those who love their pets and desire to live with them as comfortably, happily and allergy free as possible!

First you need to know that it's not your pet's fur, dander or hair that is the real problem. The real culprits are tiny proteins that are secreted by glands in your dog or cat. The allergen protein is found in the fur, saliva, urine, mucous, salivary glands and hair roots. This protein will stick to your pet's fur and dander {Dead Skin} but know that the fur and dander itself is not what you're reacting to.

For cats the protein is called the Fel D1 Glycoprotein,

For Dogs it's called Can F1 Protein

These proteins are very potent and can quickly cause an allergic reaction for those that are sensitive to them. They are also very sticky and quick to stick to your clothing furniture, bedding and carpeting in your home or office environment. Unfortunately these proteins are not sticky enough to prevent them from going airborne into the indoor breathing environment when disturbed. Cat allergen is often stronger then dog allergen and more people react to cats. Dog allergen can also be very strong but reactions from dog dander vary from breed to breed.

The good news is there are steps that can be taken {important steps} to allow you or your allergic family member{s} to limit and control the pet allergen so you can live in harmony with your beloved dog or cat! If you are diligent and follow these guidelines it can make a huge difference for those that suffer from dog and cat allergies.

The Steps to follow

First and foremost, KEEP YOUR HOME CLEAN!

Be diligent about cleaning hard services, carpeting and furniture of dust and allergens. Use a damp cloth or micro fiber cloth to clean hard surfaces and Vacuum Often! NOTE: It is very important to own and utilize a quality HEPA vacuum cleaner that is totally sealed! Most vacuum cleaners including so-called HEPA and HEPA type vacuum cleaners leak air and allergens from their case even if the HEPA filter is sealed in the machine. If you have a dog or cat many of the allergens that escape from an unsealed vacuum cleaner will be from your pet{s}! If you would like to test your vacuum cleaner for leakage it's easy to do. Just place your vacuum cleaner into the beam of light that shines through your window and turn on your vacuum cleaner. Don't even clean with it. If your vacuum cleaner is not sealed {and most are not} you will see thousands of particles including pet allergen spewing from your vacuum cleaner and back into the air that you breath! We have found that the Air Storm HEPA vacuum cleaner to be the best on the market. It's sealed like a drum and no pet dander will escape from it. NONE! The Air Storm HEPA vacuum cleaner is also made in the USA, it's lightweight and easy to operate. I'm going to say this again because it's very important. Vacuum Often!!!

The next step is to have quality HEPA room air cleaners or HEPA air purifiers in any room that you spend time in. HEPA room air cleaners are very important in the fight to remove airborne pet allergen, other allergens and dust from your living space. A quality HEPA air cleaner or air purifier should be able to clean pet allergen and other airborne allergens in an open room or area up to approximately 1000 square feet or be able to exchange the air through the HEPA air cleaner or air purifier to clean an average bedroom sized area approximately 12-15 times per hour. It is also important to choose HEPA air cleaners or air purifiers that have low filter replacement costs. Stay away from so-called air cleaners and air purifiers that do not have HEPA filters in them to actually remove the pet allergens and other allergens from the air. Also stay away from ionizers that will drop floating allergens from the air and onto your furniture, carpet and onto your bed while you are sleeping. Ionizers do not filter the air and are not the answer for pet dander problems. We have found these brands of HEPA air cleaners and HEPA air purifiers to do the best job. The Austin Air Healthmate HM-400 HEPA air cleaner, The TRACS HEPA air purifier, The EZ Air HEPA air cleaner and the Bio-Net air purifier.

If you have ducted central air or heating, it is a good idea to utilize a quality self-charging electrostatic air filter for your system. These air filters are custom made to size, washable, approximately 90 percent efficient and will last for years and years. A proper air duct cleaning company can often remove many pounds of pet allergen, dust and other allergens from your ducted central air or heating system. To find a quality and knowledgeable air duct cleaning company go to the National Air Duct Cleaners Association at http://www.NADCA.com to find NADCA Certified members in your area.

OK this one may be difficult for you to do but it is VERY IMPORTANT TO ALWAYS keep your pet{s} out of your bedroom. This will allow you to keep the most important room in your home more pet allergen free to allow you to sleep better at night. You can call your bedroom "The Allergy Free Zone!"

Other Important Things To Do

If you can, replace your carpet with tile, linoleum or hard wood floors and instead of sweeping {it puts the allergens airborne again} use a quality SEALED HEPA vacuum cleaner with a floor nozzle to contain and remove the allergens. Again, check out the Air Storm HEPA vacuum cleaner. It has a great 14-inch wide floor nozzle and no pet allergen escapes from this incredible vacuum cleaner. Replace cloth curtains with washable / vacuum able blinds.

Wash your dog or cat once a week to reduce the protein allergen sticking to their fur. Once a week can really make a difference and YES Cats will get used to their weekly bath and even enjoy them in time.

If you are highly allergic, don't wipe your eyes with your hands while playing with your pet{s}. Then wash your hands after playing with your pet{s}, and wash your clothes often. Don't leave your pet allergen covered clothes in your bedroom! Keep a hamper in a hallway bathroom.

Cover your car seats and porous fabric furniture with sheets that can be washed and when you are able too, switch to wipe able / cleanable leather or faux leather furniture.

There are companies that offer chemical sprays that claim to reduce, retard or remove pet allergens. We have determined that diligent cleaning using our provided information will do the best job of keeping you and your pet{s} together as one big happy family!

However if you can't comply with these important steps to keep your home more pet allergen free you can always make that visit to your local allergy doctor for prescription nose sprays, antihistamine pills and immunotherapy {allergy shots} The allergy shots can improve your pet allergy symptoms but they often do not eliminate them entirely.

Your allergy doctor will most likely tell you to get rid of your pet{s} {Yeah Right!} or when you do keep your pet{s} your allergy doctor will tell you to follow the above information even if you do get the sprays, drugs and allergy shots.
